Pesta Pulau Pinang is starting this weekend as an Asean bazaar

UPDATED ON OCT 16, 2008

I went to the place and did a review here…to put it in a nutshell, don’t even bother going because it is bound to be a waste of time. It is a total failure.

UPDATED ON SEPT 26:

Looks like there’s some problems so the bazaar opening was delayed until OCT 1.

Original blog post:

You know, there’s this saying that if you can’t beat them, might as well join them. Pesta Pulau Pinang has been tagged as the big, month long pasar malam (night market) for years now. Despite numerous attemps at revamping the annual event, it still fails miserably and is still one big month-long night market.

Now, with a new state government at the helm, instead of fighting this image, they decided to work around it instead. Starting on Sept 20 (this weekend!), it will become an ASEAN Cultural Centre, thus there will be an Asean Bazaar. To read more about this ‘makeover’ go here.

Here are the details of the Asean Bazaar:

When: Sept 20 – Oct 31, 2008

Where: Sungai Nibong Pesta Site

Time: 3pm – 9pm daily

What: Cultural exhibition from Asean countries with sale of handicrafts and cuisine

Entrance is free so if you have no where to go this weekend, you can check it out for the fun of it.

I was at the Pesta site last Saturday,11th.Oct.as we wanted to check out the rides on the playground and the ad shown here looks promising.

The whole place is so pathetic. There were only a handful of stalls selling pasar malam stuff and the stalls were scattered here and there. There was a long covered walkway with fans hanging overhead. The fans were all turned on even though I was there at night. It was such a waste of electricity. There were very few visitors eventhough it was Saturday night. There was nothing happening at the center stage.Don’t even bother to go to the food court.

Don’t see anything Asean about the whole event. There was only 1 stall selling Thai beauty products. Lucky they did not charge for entry otherwise no one will turn up.This event is supposed to attract tourist.I would be very malu to bring any tourist there! They would certainly leave with a bad impression.

Actually the Pesta site covers a lot of grounds and it’s prime land. What a waste!Don’t think things would improve when the year end Pesta starts in mid November. The Pesta has sadly lost it’s pulling power.Who is responsible for this white elephant?

I really pity those staying in the flats near the playground. The residents have to endure the loud horrible music every night. And now it’s exams month too. How to study? Study only after 12 midnight? It’s madness.
